Negation

Forming a negative sentence in English usually means adding 'not' to an auxiliary verb. Which auxiliary you need depends on the tense of the sentence and the subject, so it's important to match them correctly.

İngilizcede olumsuz cümle kurmak genelde bir yardımcı fiile 'not' eklemek anlamına gelir. Hangi yardımcı fiile ihtiyaç duyulacağı, cümlenin zamanına ve öznesine bağlıdır, bu yüzden bunları doğru eşleştirmek önemlidir.

📐 Rule

Negation with 'Be'
'Be' Fiili ile Olumsuzluk

  • am/is/are + not: I am not ready. She is not here. They are not late.
am/is/are + not: I am not ready. She is not here. They are not late.
  • Contractions: isn't, aren't. ('I am not' is usually contracted to 'I'm not' in speech.)
Kısaltmalar: isn't, aren't. (Konuşma dilinde 'I am not' genelde 'I'm not' olarak kısaltılır.)

Negation in Present Simple
Present Simple'da Olumsuzluk

  • don't + base verb for I/you/we/they: I don't like coffee.
    I/you/we/they ile don't + fiil kökü: I don't like coffee.
  • doesn't + base verb for he/she/it: She doesn't like coffee (the verb does NOT take -s!).
he/she/it ile doesn't + fiil kökü: She doesn't like coffee (fiile -s eklenmez!)

Negation in Past Simple
Past Simple'da Olumsuzluk

  • didn't + base verb for ALL subjects: I didn't go. She didn't go.
    TÜM öznelerde didn't + fiil kökü: I didn't go. She didn't go.
  • The verb stays in its base form — the past tense is carried by 'did', not the verb: 'She didn't went' is wrong; 'She didn't go' is correct.
Fiil kök halinde kalır — geçmiş zaman 'did' tarafından taşınır, fiil tarafından değil: 'She didn't went' yanlış; 'She didn't go' doğru.

Negation with Other Auxiliaries
Diğer Yardımcı Fiillerle Olumsuzluk

  • can→can't/cannot, will→won't, have→haven't/hasn't.
    can→can't/cannot, will→won't, have→haven't/hasn't.
  • Modal verbs are usually made negative by simply adding 'not': She can't swim.
Modal fiillerin olumsuzu genelde doğrudan 'not' eklenerek yapılır: She can't swim.
