Can / Could

'Can' and 'could' are among the most basic modal verbs in English, and they have three main functions: ability, permission, and request. Which one to use — and how polite it sounds — depends on the context.

'Can' ve 'could', İngilizcedeki en temel modal fiillerdendir ve başlıca üç işlevi vardır: yetenek, izin ve rica. Hangisinin kullanılacağı ve ne kadar kibar olduğu bağlama göre değişir.

Could = past ability, Can = present abilityCould = geçmiş yetenek, Can = şimdiki yetenek

📐 Rule

Ability
Yetenek

  • CAN shows present ability: I can swim.
CAN: şimdiki zamanda yetenek — I can swim.
  • COULD shows general PAST ability: I could swim when I was five.
COULD: geçmişteki genel yetenek — I could swim when I was five.
  • For a specific, one-time past achievement, we prefer 'was/were able to' instead of 'could': I was able to finish the race.
Belirli, tek seferlik geçmiş başarılar için 'could' yerine 'was/were able to' tercih edilir: I was able to finish the race.

Permission
İzin

  • CAN I...? — everyday, informal way to ask permission: Can I open the window?
CAN I...? — günlük, samimi izin isteme: Can I open the window?
  • COULD I...? — more polite, more formal: Could I leave early today?
COULD I...? — daha kibar, resmi: Could I leave early today?

Requests
Rica

  • CAN you...? — a casual request: Can you help me?
CAN you...? — günlük rica: Can you help me?
  • COULD you...? — a more polite request: Could you help me, please?
COULD you...? — daha kibar rica: Could you help me, please?

Structure and Negatives
Yapı ve Olumsuzluk

  • After modal verbs, the main verb stays in its base form, with no 'to': I can swim, not 'I can to swim'.
Modal fiillerden sonra fiil kök halinde kullanılır, 'to' gelmez: I can swim ('I can to swim' değil).
  • Negative forms: can't/cannot (present), couldn't (past) — She can't drive. I couldn't sleep.
    Olumsuz: can't/cannot (şimdiki), couldn't (geçmiş) — She can't drive. I couldn't sleep.

✏️ Examples

  • She can speak three languages.
    O üç dil konuşabilir.
  • Can you open the window, please?
    Pencereyi açar mısın lütfen?
  • I couldn't sleep last night.
    Dün gece uyuyamadım.
  • Could I ask you a question?
    Sana bir soru sorabilir miyim?
  • He can't drive yet.
    O henüz araba kullanamıyor.

⚠️ Common Mistakes

  • ✗ She can to swim.✓ She can swim.
  • ✗ I can swimmed when I was young.✓ I could swim when I was young.

Learning to Skate

When I was seven, I couldn't skate at all. I fell down almost every time I tried. My father could skate very well, so he decided to teach me himself.

After many weeks of practice, I could finally stand on the skates without falling. A year later, I could skate quite fast, and I could even do a small jump.

Now, I can skate confidently, and I can even teach beginners. Can you imagine how proud my father felt? He always says that anyone can learn with enough patience.

Yedi yaşındayken, hiç paten kayamıyordum. Denediğimde neredeyse her seferinde düşüyordum.

Her zaman yeterli sabırla herkesin öğrenebileceğini söyler.
