Adjectives are words that describe nouns or pronouns — they tell us how something looks, feels, or behaves. In English, the position and order of adjectives follow rules that are quite different from Turkish, so this is an area that needs careful attention.
Adjective order: size → color → nounSıfat sırası: boyut → renk → isim
📐 Rule
Position of AdjectivesSıfatın Cümledeki Konumu
- Adjectives usually come BEFORE the noun: a beautiful house, a big city.Sıfatlar genelde isimden ÖNCE gelir: a beautiful house, a big city.
- They can also come AFTER the verb 'be': The house is beautiful.'Be' fiilinden SONRA da gelebilirler: The house is beautiful.
- Unlike Turkish, adjectives never come after the noun — this is one of the most common mistakes.Türkçenin aksine, sıfatlar asla isimden sonra gelmez — bu en sık yapılan hatalardan biridir.
Order of AdjectivesSıfat Sıralaması
- When using more than one adjective, they usually follow this order: opinion → size → age → shape → color → origin → material → noun.Birden fazla sıfat kullanılırken genelde şu sıra izlenir: görüş → boyut → yaş → şekil → renk → köken → malzeme → isim.
- Example: a (beautiful) (small) (old) (round) (red) (Italian) (wooden) table.Örnek: a (beautiful) (small) (old) (round) (red) (Italian) (wooden) table.
- In natural speech, people rarely use more than two or three adjectives together.Doğal konuşmada insanlar genelde ikiden ya da üçten fazla sıfatı bir arada kullanmaz.
Adjectives Don't ChangeSıfatlar Çekimlenmez
- Adjectives never change for number: a big house, two big houses (never 'bigs').Sıfatlar sayıya göre asla değişmez: a big house, two big houses ('bigs' değil).
- They also don't change for gender, unlike some other languages.Diğer bazı dillerin aksine cinsiyete göre de değişmezler.
-ed vs -ing Adjectives-ed / -ing Sıfatları
- -ed adjectives describe the person who FEELS something: I am bored.-ed sıfatları bir duyguyu HİSSEDEN kişiyi anlatır: I am bored.
- -ing adjectives describe the thing or situation itself: The movie is boring.-ing sıfatları bir şeyin ya da durumun kendisini anlatır: The movie is boring.
- These are often confused: 'I am boring' means 'I am a boring person', which is very different from 'I am bored'.Bu ikisi sık karıştırılır: 'I am boring' demek 'sıkıcı bir insanım' demektir, 'I am bored' ile aynı anlama gelmez.

📖 Reading Passage
~1 min readA Perfect Little Café
There is a small, cozy café near my office. It has warm yellow walls and comfortable brown chairs. The friendly owner always remembers my favorite order: a hot, sweet coffee with a little milk.
The café serves delicious homemade cakes. My favorite is the rich chocolate cake with fresh strawberries on top. It is quite expensive, but it tastes absolutely amazing, so I don't mind paying a little more.
On sunny mornings, I like to sit at the small wooden table near the window. It's a peaceful, quiet spot to read a good book before a busy day at work.
